If you're hiring a contractor for any work, make sure to always ask to see a copy of their license before starting the work. Contractor licenses and trade licenses are public information and can be looked up on each states website, so there is never a reason that a licensed contractor shouldn't be able to provide it for you.
Checking for a license before starting a project with a contractor protects you as the customer because it shows they have the proper experience and training to do the work that is being performed. It also shows they have taken and passed the exams necessary for the state, so they are familiar with any applicable laws or codes that are required for your project.
Additionally, working with an unlicensed contractor leaves all of the responsibility for the work on you as the home owner. Without a license, the contractor will be unable to pull the necessary permits required for the work, so anything that is done incorrectly or any damages that occur to the property are now your liability as the homeowner.
